3rd National Scientific Conference on Thalassemia
On Apr 24-25, 2019, the Vietnam Thalassemia Association, in collaboration with the National Institute of Hematology and Blood Transfusion and related organizations, held the 3rd Scientific Conference on Thalassemia in Hanoi, in response to World Thalassemia Day on May 8, with the message:
"Joining hands to push back thalassemia for the health of the Vietnamese bloodline."

The conference set out objectives for surveying Thalassemia disease genes by population group, geographic region, and ethnicity. Through this, epidemiological information on Thalassemia will provide an overall picture for timely prevention, detection, and treatment.

According to 2017 statistics, more than 12 million people in Vietnam currently carry a Thalassemia gene. This is a problem for society as a whole, seriously affecting the quality of the population. Prevention is the most effective control measure, together with the involvement of ministries, departments, authorities at all levels, and society as a whole to help control the disease, curb the spread of disease genes, reduce the number of children born with the disease, improve patients' quality of life, and raise the quality of Vietnam's population.

Dr. Duong Quoc Chinh, Head of the Department of Genetics and Molecular Biology, National Institute of Hematology and Blood Transfusion, presenting on testing methods. Among them, new Thalassemia variants were detected by next-generation sequencing (NGS)
In-depth presentations by specialist physicians and PhD scientists showed that new mutation types of thalassemia have been discovered in Vietnam that had never been published before, as well as types that are rare among Vietnamese people. Screening results from molecular testing methods using next-generation sequencing (NGS) technology have helped to better control epidemiological information on Thalassemia and to use appropriate molecular testing tools in the prevention and control of the disease.

Prof. Suthat Fucharoen, Mahidol University and Institute of Molecular Biosciences, sharing achievements in Thalassemia testing and diagnosis.
