Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) is a virus of the Herpesviridae family that is transmitted mainly through saliva. It is the causative agent of infectious mononucleosis, which is common in adolescents and presents with symptoms such as fever, sore throat and swollen lymph nodes. In addition, EBV is associated with many malignancies such as nasopharyngeal carcinoma, lymphoma (especially B-cell lymphoma) and lymphoproliferative disorders in immunocompromised people.
Quantitative EBV testing by Real-time PCR enables accurate determination of the EBV DNA load in blood, thereby supporting diagnosis and disease monitoring. According to guidelines from the World Health Organization and numerous clinical studies, EBV load is valuable in assessing disease severity, particularly in nasopharyngeal carcinoma and other EBV-associated malignancies.
The test also plays an important role in monitoring treatment response and disease prognosis. A decrease in EBV DNA load after treatment is usually associated with a good response, while a renewed increase may signal a risk of relapse. In particular, in organ transplant patients, routine EBV monitoring helps detect the risk of post-transplant lymphoproliferative disorder early, allowing timely intervention.
