Pneumocystis jirovecii (formerly known as carinii) is an opportunistic microorganism that causes disease mainly in immunocompromised people. It causes Pneumocystis jirovecii pneumonia, which is common in patients with HIV/AIDS, organ transplant recipients and people taking immunosuppressive drugs.
Diagnosing Pneumocystis jirovecii is challenging because the symptoms are non-specific and traditional staining methods have low sensitivity. Therefore, detection of Pneumocystis jirovecii by Real-time PCR is increasingly widely used.
Real-time PCR enables detection of the pathogen's DNA with high sensitivity and specificity, even at low loads. The test is usually performed on respiratory specimens such as bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) or sputum.
